Pierpont History & Area Guide

Ocean Views, Fascinating History and Fun Activities at Our California Hotel

The History of The Pierpont Inn
The historic Pierpont Inn was built in Ventura, California in 1910 to accommodate the auto enthusiasts traveling up and down the Pacific Coast Highway in an exciting new invention known as the automobile.

Weary travelers needed a hotel along the California coast to rest and recharge with a home-cooked meal. Josephine Pierpont rose to the challenge and commissioned famous architect Sumner P. Hunt to design a Craftsman bungalow-style inn that would later become a hotel that Pacific Coast travelers have come to know and love for over a century.

During your stay, you can enjoy effortless access to a diverse range of Ventura California attractions, including:

Ventura State Beach

A great deal of Ventura's coastline is dedicated to the State Park. This pristine stretch of coastline offers abundant opportunities for swimming, surfing and picnicking along two miles of sandy beach and sand dunes. Services include a parking lot, a snack bar and a beach-equipment rental shop, with several bike trails extending to nearby beaches of interest.

Ventura Pier

Originally built in 1872, this iconic structure is one of California’s oldest wooden piers. The pier extends 1,700 feet into the Pacific Ocean and offers a snack bar, restrooms, a seafood restaurant with a gift shop and spectacular views of the Channel Islands, the Ventura coastline and the surrounding mountains.

Channel Islands National Park

Situated 14 miles offshore, the five Channel Islands are ideal for day trips or an overnight camping adventure. The cruise to the islands is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, as voyagers are treated to the sight of cavorting dolphins and spouting whales. Recreational options abound on the island, including hiking, camping, sailing, boating, diving, snorkeling, surfing, and kayaking.

Fishermen have their choice of spots. The historic Ventura Pier is a great place to fish for Kelp Bass, Halibut, Bonito, Spotfin Croaker, Barracuda or Thresher Shark, while fishing charters from Ventura Harbor provide anglers with world-class sport fishing and deep sea fishing experiences they will never forget.

In addition to sailing and fishing charters, Ventura Harbor offers kayak and paddle boat rentals for adventurers who want to explore the coastline at their own pace.

From downtown's unique boutiques to the full spectrum of modern retailers available at the Pacific View Mall to the many antique stores found throughout the city, Ventura is truly a shopper's dream. Nearby outlet stores are perfect for bargain hunting as are the thrift stores found in midtown and downtown Ventura.

Family Fun

Need a break from Ventura’s sun, sand and surf? See monarch butterflies roosting in the trees at Camino Real Park, or go for a hike in Ojai or in the Los Padres National Forest. Relax at Lake Casitas, where you can rent flat-bottom boats, fish, and, in the summer months, frolic in the children's water playground fountain. At Ventura Harbor, kids can take a spin on the delightful carousel or a cruise around the harbor. Families can also rent kayaks or paddle boats to explore the nooks and crannies of the harbor, nearby keys and shore on their own.

Arts & Culture

From cutting-edge art galleries to historic sites like Olivas Adobe Historical Park, Ortega Adobe and the Mission San Buenaventura, Ventura’s rich and diverse cultural scene includes a busy arts calendar filled with music, theater, dance, art exhibits, festivals, and crafts shows every month of the year.

Historic Downtown Ventura

Ventura's historic Downtown Cultural District is steeped in California history and legend. Historic homes, museums, boutiques, Mission San Buenaventura, antique shops and restaurants adorn the palm tree-lined avenues. Ventura's famous ArtWalks are also held downtown twice a year and a variety of Street Fairs, holiday celebrations and parades are staged as well.

Ventura’s beautiful golf courses offer an unparalleled golfing experience for both weekend duffers and scratch handicappers alike. From the William Park Bell and Forrest Richardson designed Buenaventura Golf Course, to Olivas Links, the course named one of the "Best Municipal Courses in the Nation" for 2009 and 2010 by Golfweek Magazine, Ventura is a golfers’ dream destination.
